Imprint Television UFO Blu-ray

New UFO Blu-ray Set Coming Soon!

In January 2025, Imprint Television (a division of the Australian company Via Vision Entertainment) announced their upcoming March 2025 Imprint Television releases. And in their usual way, they teased tiny squares of cover artwork and gave people 24 hours to guess what these might be. And one of the titles turned out to be UFO, due to be released March 26th 2025! This was not a total surprise, as in recent years Imprint Television has released several ITC series, including Space:1999 and The Prisoner.

Below are the information sheets for this new UFO release. This will be a limited edition hard box release, containing 8 Blu-ray discs and a 120-page booklet. The set includes all 26 episodes in their original 4:3 aspect ratio, and includes the original mono audio plus a surround sound mix. It also will include practically every special feature from every previous UFO DVD and Blu-ray release, plus a few new extras!

There is nothing here about any region restrictions, but so far all Imprint Television releases have been "all region", so presumably UFO will be as well. So they should play on any Blu-ray player worldwide.

Prior to this UFO has been released on Blu-ray 3 times worldwide (Japan, Germany, UK), and also 7 times on DVD. Unfortunately however, many fans have noted that the Blu-ray releases have in some ways fallen short of the DVD releases. UFO was shot on 35mm film, and the original camera negatives do exist, so in theory one could have a stunning HD (or even 4K) video release. However so far all of the Blu-ray releases have been based on a 20 year old film scan and a low-budget restoration made by the copyright holder at the time (Granada). In 2016 there was an attempt to fix this for the UK (Network) Blu-ray, but in some regards that release turned out to be even worse (e.g. too much digital noise reduction).

The information sheet for this new release indicates that there will be new grading work and updates applied to select episodes, indicating that is not a brand new film scan, and it is not a completely new restoration. But hopefully this will fix some/all of the major issues with the Blu-ray previous releases.

I will update this page as I learn more, especially after I've received my copy!
